Nicki Minaj released after apparent arrest in the Netherlands on suspicion of exporting soft drugs
Nicki Minaj was traveling from Amsterdam to Manchester, England, for a concert as part of her “Pink Friday 2 World Tour” when she was reportedly detained by Dutch authorities on suspicion of exporting soft drugs. The 41-year-old rapper, whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, was fined and released from custody on Saturday, allowing her to continue her journey.
According to a police statement posted on social media, Minaj was allowed to resume her travels after paying the fine. Her concert in Manchester, scheduled for that night at the Co-op Live arena, was postponed due to the incident. Live Nation UK expressed regret over the situation, acknowledging Minaj's efforts to proceed with the show despite the unforeseen complications. They assured ticket holders that their tickets would remain valid for the rescheduled concert.
Although the police did not explicitly name Minaj in their official statements, a spokesperson confirmed that a 41-year-old American woman was arrested at Schiphol Airport for possession of soft drugs. This led to widespread speculation and later confirmation through Minaj's social media posts that she was indeed the individual involved.
In a post shared early Sunday morning, Minaj detailed her ordeal, explaining that she spent 5-6 hours in a jail cell before her flight eventually departed. She expressed deep apologies to her fans, emphasizing her commitment to rescheduling the canceled show and delivering an exceptional performance. Minaj mentioned potential reschedule dates in June or July and reassured fans that the second Manchester show on Thursday and the Birmingham concert on Sunday would proceed as planned.
Minaj shared her frustration and suspicion about the motives behind the incident through a series of social media updates. She posted a video on X showing an airport official explaining the need to search her luggage. Despite the official's claim of a "random quick check," Minaj questioned why her luggage wasn't searched earlier and expressed concerns about potential sabotage against her tour.
In further posts, Minaj suggested that individuals were attempting to derail her tour due to its success. She accused people of lying to her and manipulating situations to harm her financially and professionally. Minaj hinted at having video evidence of the encounter and mentioned her intention to involve lawyers to address the issue.
During an Instagram Live session, Minaj filmed the police instructing her to get into a van to be taken to the police station. She mentioned being required to make a statement about her security. Despite the setback, Minaj remained resolute, promising fans that she would find a way to compensate for the inconvenience and ensure a memorable experience at her rescheduled concert.
The incident highlights the challenges and unexpected obstacles faced by artists while on tour and underscores Minaj's dedication to her fans and her craft.
